Hungarian grammar: hanem vagy de?
Hanem
"Hanem" corrects the information in the previous clause and it always follows a NEM phrase.
Példák:
Anna nem mérnök, hanem tanár.
EN: Anna is not an engineer but a teacher.
DE: Anna ist nicht Ingenieur, sondern Lehrerin.
Explanation: “Hanem” corrects the information “mérnök”. We still speak about professions but the information was wrong and with "hanem" we could give the correct information.
Nem magyarul beszélek, hanem németül.
EN: The language I speak is not Hungarian but German.
DE: Ich spreche nicht ungarisch, sondern deutsch.
Explanation: Here “hanem” corrects the information of “magyarul”. Again, there was a negation of a phrase and we corrected it with "hanem" and the correct information.
Nem Katinak hívnak, hanem Krisztinának.
EN: My name is not Kati but Krisztina.
DE: Ich heiße nicht Kati, sondern Krisztina.
Explanation: "Hanem" corrects the wrong name - again, it's just a phrase (the name itself) and not the whole clause. I'm still talking about names!
DE
"De" gives a contrast to the previous CLAUSE or adds some new information. It shows a contrast to what we would expect logically and what really happens:
Példák:
Beteg vagyok, de dolgozok.
EN: I am ill but am working. DE: Ich in krank, aber ich arbeite.
Explanation: We would logically assume that a sick person won’t work, so there is a contrast to the clause! Not just to one word/phrase but the whole previous clause.
Rossz az idő, de elmegyünk kirándulni.
EN: The weather is bad but we are going on a trip. DE: Das Wetter ist schlecht, aber wir machen einen Ausflug.
Explanation: Often people don’t go on a trip when the weather is bad, so there is a contrast to the whole clause again "Rossz az idő".
Éva nem szép, de nagyon kedves.
EN: Éva isn’t beautiful, but she is very kind. DE: Éva ist nicht schön, aber sehr lieb.
Explanation: Here “de” gives a new piece of information that is in contrast with "nem szép". "Nem szép" is a negative thing (in our society at least...) as opposed to the word "kedves". We couldn’t use “és” here because of the negation in the first clause.)
A little help:
In sentences with "DE" you normally can form an English sentence with "even though" and it makes perfect sense. With "HANEM" sentences it's not possible.
Compare:
Beteg vagyok, de dolgozok.
ENGLISH:
1. I'm ill but I'm working.
2. I'm working, even though I'm ill.
Anna nem mérnök, hanem tanár.
ENGLISH:
1. Anna is not an engineer but a teacher.
2. NO "even though" sentence is possible!
További példák:
Utálom a maszkot, de felveszem, mert nem akarom elkapni a vírust.
EN: I hate the mask but I’ll put it on because I don’t want to catch the
Nem a maszkot utálom, hanem a vírust!
EN: It’s not the mask I hate but the virus!
Éhes vagyok, de nem eszek semmit.
EN: I’m hungry but I won’t eat anything.
Nem éhes vagyok, hanem szomjas!
EN: I’m not hungry but thirsty!
Fáj a fejem, de nem veszek be fájdalomcsillapítót.
EN: I have a headache but I won't take a painkiller.
Nem a fejem fáj, hanem a hátam!
EN: I don't have a headache but a backache!
