Effective method to learn Hungarian

Texts and videos

I believe that you should improve all your skills at the same time to reach your goals fast! So, even if your main focus is speaking, your progress will be quicker if you also read texts and listen to spoken Hungarian as much as possible! I will use lots of texts and audios/videos in my lessons. Normally I give you these materials as homework and we discuss them in class. You can find some of the materials we can use together here!

Homework

It's very important that you practise what we have covered in the lessons. I will always make sure to give you personalised homework that makes your progress very quick if you put in the necessary effort too!

Lesson types

You can choose from four basic lesson types:

L1. Hungarian Simplified Naturalization Interview + language exam preparation

If you are preparing for the Simplified Citizenship Interview, we will cover all the topics that typically come up during the interview, such as family, your Hungarian ancestry, work, education, weather, hobbies, Hungarian culture, and more. For homework, I will provide you with plenty of audio materials, texts, and exercises to improve your listening skills and expand your vocabulary. In class, we will focus on speaking. Of course, we will also learn the essential grammar you need to form sentences and use the language creatively!

After a few lessons, we will regularly test your progress with a small “exam.” This will help you review and consolidate what you’ve learned while keeping you motivated.

If you are preparing for a language exam, we will practice exam-like exercises, including speaking (normal conversations, picture descriptions, dialogues, etc.), listening (as homework), writing (as homework), and reading (as homework). Expect a lot of homework in this course!

In class, we will focus on speaking, building your vocabulary, and addressing any grammar points you don’t fully understand or where we both feel improvement is needed. We will cover all the exam topics, giving special attention to those you find most challenging.

L2. Professional lessons based on certain books

In this type of lesson, we use a book of our choice. It can be a traditional textbook or a special book to help:

• expand your vocabulary
• establish your grammar skills
• enhance your communication skills with certain topics

In the trial lesson, we discuss which book would best suit your needs and goals. During class we will concentrate on speaking/communicative exercises (unless your goal is working on your grammar or writing, etc.) and I will give you homework (grammar, vocabulary, writing, etc.) from the book. I recommend this type of class for beginners because they often need a structured lesson and set materials to see their progress and feel good about the learning process. I also recommend this class if you are an advanced student but you would like to focus on expanding your vocabulary or improving your grammar and you wish to do that in a more structured way (vocabulary book with exercises, etc.). If you don't like using books, however, because you feel that it prevents you and the lessons from being flexible and spontaneous, then one of our other lessons may be a better choice.

L3. Professional lessons based on "sitcom" dialogue-series

These dialogues will expand your vocabulary enormously and after each part you will get vocabulary and grammar exercises plus regular reviewing materials to help ensure that you also retain what you have learned. The vocabulary you learn through the story is everyday vocabulary, including slang words and expressions that we use on a daily basis. Many of these expressions you would not find in a traditional textbook, although these are very important to understand real spoken Hungarian! The dialogues come with audio, so you can improve your pronunciation and listening comprehension as well. I recommend these lessons if you like reading because in this course you will read (and listen to audios) after each class as homework! During class, however, we will focus on speaking and vocabulary (or grammar or whatever you need). We will talk a lot about different topics and about our everyday lives, so mostly your homework will focus on the dialogues and the story. In addition, we will practise similar dialogues in class.

L4. LISTENING Course at 3 levels  

I recommend this course if you would like to improve your listening comprehension because you feel that even though your Hungarian is not that bad, you still find it very difficult to understand spoken texts, like podcasts or YouTube speakers or Hungarians speaking to you. 

In this course, I will send you audio files with exercises to different topics as homework, and we will practise these conversation topics together in class. Of course, I will also teach you the necessary grammar and anything else that you need, as I will adapt to your goals and needs.

L5. Professional individual lessons

In this course we don't use any set materials, such as a textbook, so this course is very flexible and it adapts to your specific needs and goals. I recommend this course for those students who prefer customised and spontaneous lessons that totally follow their current needs and interests. We speak a lot in these lessons too (by using random texts, videos, etc.) and the homework I give is always based on the current lesson. For example, if a problem of conjugation comes up during class, I will give you homework focusing on verb conjugation, etc. We will choose the topics of the class together and very spontaneously, depending on the previous lesson or what we feel like talking about at the moment. Or you can also tell me which topics you would like to talk about. So, this type of class is great for you if you prefer learning individually on your own and mostly with your own materials but you feel that you need extra speaking practice or have occasional/regular questions regarding grammar, vocabulary, etc. However, I don't recommend this type of class if you are the type of student who needs a clear syllabus and a textbook in order to feel that you are making progress! You will make lots of progress with this type of class too, but some students may find it frustrating that they don't have any "tangible evidence", like a textbook to tell them where they are exactly in their learning process and where they are heading, etc.

L6. Professional GROUP classes

 Should you have any family members or friends who are at the same level as you and would like to learn together, that's no problem. However, please note that this will only work if your goals, motivation levels, and skills are similar.

Additionally, keep in mind that adults learn differently from children. Therefore, I don’t recommend that adults learn together with children, as they require different approaches and teaching methods.

In this course, we will preferably use a book suited to your level. For beginners, I normally use the MagyarOK book.

Rescheduling or Cancellation of Classes

Classes can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled time. You can cancel or reschedule  by emailing us at info@hungariankati.com. Please note that cancellations or rescheduling are not allowed within 24 hours of the class. If, for any reason, you are unable to attend the class and  do not notify us at least  24 hours PRIOR to the start, you will be charged.

However, if you purchase a package of 10 classes, one of these 10 classes (but only one!) may be cancelled or rescheduled within the 24-hour window. (Please note: if you fail to notify us of your absence (no-show), you will be charged for the missed class.)

Invoices / Receipts

When you purchase a class, we will issue an electronic invoice or receipt in accordance with Hungarian law. For this, we require your E-Mail address, full name, and postal address. Your personal data will be used solely for the purpose of issuing ivoices/receipts and will not be misused.
